Cocoon vs Swaddle Sack:  What is the difference between the cocoon option and the swaddle sack?

The "swaddle sack" is typically made in newborn size only and includes ties at the top.  It is very small to fit a newborn that is still curled up in a fetal position and will not fit older babies.  This style is specifically designed for newborn photographers and is what you usually see in professional newborn photos.  *A swaddle sack is intended to be a photo prop only used under close supervision, as—due to the ties—it does not meet Safe Sleep standards.

The "cocoon" option includes larger sizes and is more of a snuggle sack or sleeping bag (and does not have the ties at the neck).  The cocoon provides more room for baby to stretch out and will fit the baby longer.  I usually recommend the cocoon option if you are making a gift for a new mother or for a baby shower.

Most of my patterns include both options.
